Adopt-a-Street – Health and Safety Guidance
Do
- Remember, your safety is the most important consideration. Do not put yourself at risk while out litter picking.
- Consider use of advance warning, either by sign or operative, where litter picking in areas where visibility of operation is restricted.
- Supervise any children assisting with your litter pick.
- Always wear reflective tabards/protective gloves and stout footwear.
- Pick up litter with the equipment provided.
- Use the sacks provided to collect litter and tie securely when full.
- Dispose of sacks in your household waste bin or if a large amount has been collected please email streetsandamenities@malvernhills.gov.uk to arrange collection.
- When litter picking highways walk against the flow of traffic. Litter picking should only ever be carried out on highways with footpaths or wide verges. Litter pickers should always keep a safe distance from the road.
Do not - Carry out litter picking when visibility or weather conditions are poor.
- Overfill sacks.
- Try to lift multiple sacks or a load that is too heavy.
- Pick up any needles/syringes. Please report these via www.malvernhills.gov.uk/report-it
- Pick up any broken glass or other dangerous items (eg unidentified cans or canisters, oil drums, poisons, insecticides, clinical waste, other hazardous substances). Please report these by emailing streetsandamenities@malvernhills.gov.uk
- Carry out any litter picking on any major roads, or at any location where fast moving traffic is likely.
